the story

Shiva is the third member of the great trio of gods — creator, preserver, and transformer. When he dances the Tandava, the whole universe pulses with energy; when he sits still in meditation, even the Himalayan wind holds its breath. He has a third eye that opens only when something needs to be made right.

Long ago, gods and demons churned the milk ocean for a potion of immortality. First up from the depths came a terrible poison that could destroy the world. Shiva drank it in one gulp. It turned his throat blue — that is why one of his names is Neelkanth, 'the blue-throated one'.

When the river goddess Ganga tumbled down from heaven, her fall would have shattered the earth. Shiva caught her in his hair and let her flow down gently as a stream. And Nandi, his white bull, sits patiently outside every Shiva temple, waiting for his master.

Catching a Mighty River

Bhagiratha prayed for the river Ganga to reach Earth. Her rushing waters were much too strong. Shiva caught Ganga gently in his tangled hair. He let her flow down safely.

⭐ Lesson: Great strength can be gentle.

The Three Flying Forts

Three mighty demons had three flying forts. They used their power to trouble the world. Shiva waited until the forts lined up. With one arrow, he defeated them and ended their terror.

⭐ Lesson: Use your power to protect, not to frighten.
