the story

Rama was the eldest prince of Ayodhya, famous for keeping every promise. When his father had to send him away for fourteen years, Rama went without a complaint — and his wife Sita and brother Lakshmana chose the forest over the palace, just to be with him.

In the forest, the ten-headed demon king Ravana tricked and stole Sita, carrying her across the sea to his island kingdom of Lanka. Rama gathered an army of monkeys and bears. Hanuman, mightiest of them all, leapt across the ocean and found Sita, carrying back her jewel as a sign of hope.

The armies built a bridge of floating stones across the sea — legend says the stones floated because Rama's name was written on them. Rama defeated Ravana, rescued Sita, and returned home to Ayodhya. The whole city lit tiny clay lamps to welcome him — which is why families still light lamps on Diwali.
