the story

Krishna was born at midnight in a prison, because a cruel king feared a prophecy. His father carried the baby across the flooded Yamuna river to the village of cowherds, where Yashoda and Nanda raised him as their own. As a child he was famous for two things: playing the flute so sweetly that everyone stopped to listen, and stealing butter — the villages called him 'Makhan Chor', the butter thief.

When a storm sent by the god Indra threatened his village, little Krishna lifted the entire Govardhan hill on one finger, like an umbrella, so every person and cow could shelter underneath. He also danced on the coils of the serpent Kaliya until the river was safe again. Wherever Krishna went, trouble was defeated by playfulness.

As a grown man, Krishna became the dear friend and charioteer of the warrior Arjuna. Before a great battle, Arjuna lost heart — and Krishna's counsel to him became the Bhagavad Gita, the beloved 'song of God'. Its message is simple: do your duty with love, and leave the rest.
