the story

Kartikeya was born from six blazing sparks that flew from Shiva's third eye. Six star-nurses, the Krittikas, carried him away and raised him — and from their care he grew six heads, one for each mother, so he could watch every direction at once.

His great test came from the demon Surapadman, whose army darkened the seas. Kartikeya's divine spear — the vel — flew true and split the demon in two. Instead of destroying him, the spear's kindness turned the halves into a peacock and a rooster: one became his ride, the other his flag.

He is worshipped most warmly in Tamil Nadu, where devotees climb hills and carry offerings on Thaipusam. Children there grow up hearing his name chanted joyfully: 'Vel! Vel!' — the spear that always finds its mark.
