the story

Vishnu sleeps and dreams on the coils of the giant serpent Adishesha, floating on a cosmic ocean. Every so often, trouble boils over somewhere in the world — a demon grows too strong, a flood rises, goodness flickers — and Vishnu wakes and comes down in a new form, called an avatar.

His ten famous avatars begin with Matsya the fish, who saved the first man from a great flood, and continue through a turtle, a boar, a half-man, a dwarf, a warrior, and end with Rama and Krishna — a storybook of forms that amazes scientists today.

In the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna (as Vishnu's avatar) makes a promise: 'Whenever goodness fades and darkness grows, I return, age after age.' That promise is why families feel Vishnu is always nearby, keeping the world on its course.

Earth's Big Rescue

Earth lay deep beneath the ocean. Vishnu became Varaha, a mighty boar. He dived down and defeated the demon Hiranyaksha. Then he lifted Earth gently on his tusks. Earth was safe again.

The Fish Who Grew

Manu cared for a tiny fish. The fish grew bigger and bigger. It was Vishnu as Matsya! When a great flood came, Matsya guided Manu's boat. The boat carried sages and seeds safely through the water.
