the story

A buffalo demon named Mahishasura had won a tricky blessing: no god alone could defeat him. He grew bolder and bolder, and the heavens grew grey with worry. So the gods pooled all their shining light together — and from that light stepped Durga, radiant and roaring, riding a lion.

For nine days and nine nights, Durga battled the shape-shifting demon — as buffalo, as lion, as storm. On the tenth day, her trident found its mark, and good won. That tenth day, Vijayadashami, is still celebrated as the day of victory.

Her nine nights, Navratri, are the nine forms of Durga — nine ways a mother protects her children. In Gujarat, families dance the garba in circles around a lit lamp; in Bengal, drums beat and clay images of Durga sail down the river at festival's end.
