Night of time

Her story and significance
The seventh form is Kalaratri. Her name includes ratri, the word for night. Artists show her with dark skin and untamed hair, sometimes riding a donkey. To a little child she might look surprising. Families honour her as a powerful protector, not as someone to be afraid of.
Night can feel strange because we cannot see everything around us. A child might call out to a parent, hold a soft toy, or turn on a little light. Kalaratri's fierce appearance expresses an idea: even frightening things can be faced, and the goddess stands against dangers that worry her devotees.
It is all right to feel scared. Bravery can mean saying what frightened us and asking someone safe to stay nearby. In the dark, we are allowed to reach for help.
A little prayer

Om Devi Kalaratryai Namah
I bow to Kalaratri, the protector in the night.
A traditional short name mantra, not a verse from the Devi Mahatmya. Audio is not available for this prayer.
